CBI to issue red notice against Nicole Tamang

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has faced criticism from the Calcutta High Court for being unable to trace Gorkha Janamukti Morcha leader Nicole Tamang, the prime accused in the Madan Tamang murder case, has decided to issue a red notice through Interpol against the GJM leader as it suspects he may have fled the country.
Nicole was arrested in connection with the murder of Madan Tamang, president of All India Gorkha League (AIGL), in Darjeeling, on May 21, 2010.
According to the CBI, which took over the case last year, Nicole fled from the custody of the West Bengal CID in Siliguri on August 22, 2010.
Nicole’s wife Pema Tamang had filed a habeas corpus petition in September 2010, seeking the intervention of the High Court in the disappearance of her husband.
She feared that he might have been killed by the police and his body burnt or buried. Last week, on June 23, the court gave the CBI a month’s time to trace him.
Officials in New Delhi said that they have received the application from West Bengal to issue a red notice against Nicole as they fear that he might have fled from the country.
“We have sought details of his passport and other identification documents which will help to issue a red notice. The investigation conducted by CBI also points that he might be hiding outside the country where his movement is unhindered. The red notice will also help the agency to restrict his movement,” said a top CBI official.
The CBI officials said Nicole has been booked in three cases with non-bailable sections including 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).
