Kolkata, July 21, 2011: Riding high on the election victory and peace initiatives in Jangalmahal and Darjeeling, Mamata Banerjee would address her first public rally as the West Bengal chief minister in the state capital on Thursday.
The City of Joy was likely to come to a standstill as over 10 lakh people were expected to attend the rally, being organised by the ruling Trinamool Congress to observe Martyrs' Day as it has planned a public meeting at Brigade Parade Ground.
The political message from the party chief was expected to reach out to the lowest level functionary. Banerjee would also launch her new youth brigade and a party anthem to mark the occasion.
Even as the preparations were on in full swing, rain might play a spoilsport.
Talking about preparations for the rally, Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee said, "We are trying our level best. Though there are people coming from all across the state to Kolkata, but still Trinamool workers are disciplined. Kolkata will run accordingly."
With security being a prime concern, over 10,000 police personnel have been deployed around the venue. However, traffic jams in the city were possible. To minimise the effect, vehicular traffic could be diverted to arterial roads.
With thousands coming to city from various districts, even the suburban trains were expected to be overcrowded. Tram services were likely to be suspended temporarily.
