GJM Requests WB Govt Not to Reorganise Districts

PTI | Darjeeling | Aug 02, 2011: The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha today requested the West Bengal government not to reorganise any district before its demand for inclusion of some areas of Jalpaiguri in the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) is finalised.

"We came to know know that one of the agendas that will be discussed at the all party meeting called by the WB government on August 3 at Kolkata will be the reorganisation of some districts of the state." GJM spokesperson Harka Bahadur Chettri said.

"Though we do not know how many districts will be reorganised, but the GJM would request the government not to reorganise any district before the shape of the GTA is finalised," Chettri said.

The GJM is worried that if Jalpaiguri district is reorganised it will be difficult for the inclusion of the Gorkha-dominated ares of the plains into the proposed GTA.

A high-power committee under the chairmanship of Justice Shyamal Sen was formed to survey the Gorkha-dominated areas of Dooars and Terai.

The GJM has demanded 196 mouzas of the Dooars under the GTA's jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, Chettri said the GJM would ask the people of Darjeeling to pay electricity bills from only August 1.

The party also asked businessmen not to pay their outstanding sales tax dues during the agitation phase and only pay sales tax from August 1.
