A police vehicle and a Seema Surksha Bal (SSB) vehicle was damaged by villagers at Naxalbari Panighat road

Darjeeling, Aug 25 (PTI) A police vehicle and a Seema Surksha Bal (SSB) vehicle was damaged by villagers and the Naxalbari Panighat road in Darjeeling district blocked by them today alleging high handedness of the SSB personnel, police sources said. The villagers alleged that the SSB personnel intercepted a pick-up van carrying cattle along the Indo-Nepal border at Panitanki last evening. The SSB personnel seized the cattle alleging that the cattle was being smuggled from Nepal and detained one of the persons while the driver managed to escape the informed the villagers about the incident, the sources said. The villagers today staged a road blockade at Naxalbari demanding release of the man detained by the SSB and also the cattle. They claimed that the pick-up van was on its way to Mirik when SSB personnel intercepted them. When a police team went to the spot the angry villagers damaged the police vehicle and a SSB vehicle, the sources said. Additional Superintendent of Police (Siliguri) Amit P Javalagi said "two cases have been registered against villagers for damaging police and SSB vehicles. Another case has been registered against the SSB personnel following complain lodged by villagers." The SSB officials were not available for comment on the allegation.
