Gorkhaland Demand - Gorkha Jan Mukti Yuva Morcha sent fax to CM-PM and others

DARJEELING 25 NOV: The GJMM youth affiliate, Gorkha Jan Mukti Yuva Morcha, today sent a memorandum through fax addressed to the President of India, the Prime Minister, the West Bengal chief minister and others, asking them to seriously consider the Gorkhaland demand.
Significantly, the organisation has decided to kick off renewed agitation in support of the statehood demand from 18 December through a rally to be held in Mongpoo. This is around the time when the state government is likely to proceed with the elections to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. As per the provisions of the GTA agreement signed on 18 July, the elections would be held within six months since the inking of the draft.
The youth wing of the preponderant party in the Hills has also decided to involve the common people in programmes like putting up Gorkhaland flags everywhere in the proposed Gorkhaland territory. “This would deepen the people’s attachment to the cause we are espousing,” said a GJYM spokesperson.
The GJYM executive committee member, Mr Anjul Chauhan, today said that the new phase of the Gorkhaland movement might begin well before 18 December. “We would ask the people to be prepared for sacrifice as the new phase of the movement would go on for an indefinite period. The Centre must clarify its stance vis-à-vis the movement that has been continuing over a century. We would not relent until the collective voice in the Hills is given the serious consideration it deserves,” he said.
However, the party central committee seems to have been caught in a dilemma as to whether it would lend full weight to the movement to be launched by the youth wing or to keep a discreet distance in view of the GTA obligations. ‘We are trying to press the central committee to fall in line,” said a GJYM spokesperson.
