SILIGURI, 5 DEC: Former Indian Football captain, Bhaichung Bhutia, today seemed happy with the land given to him by the state government for the proposed football academy at Sisabari under Naxalbari block on the outskirts of Siliguri. He said the construction might begin from early next year. The academy, once completed, would help players from north Bengal as well as the North-east, he said.
“The location is good. I hope it would turn out to be the best football academy in the country. An astro-turf would be set up along with two natural fields. This aside, it would also have facilities like swimming pool, gymnasium and the like. I am confident that there would not be any dearth of investment for my dream project,” the ace footballer told reporters after a meeting with north Bengal development minister Mr Gautam Deb.
Mr Deb said things were moving fast, thanks to the sincerity of the chief minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee. “Initially Bhaichung wanted that the proposed Academy should come up in Kolkata, but we insisted that it should be in Siliguri instead. Now, with the decks having been cleared, we would see to it that it would touch international standards of excellence. We are happy that Bhaichung has liked the land earmarked for the proposed academy. Red-tape and other bureaucratic haggling would not be allowed to delay the project. The project would be completed at the earliest,” Mr Deb said.
