Shiva Thapa clinched a gold medal in the Senior National Boxing Championship at Chennai

GUWAHATI, Dec 10 – Ace boxer of the country Shiva Thapa clinched a gold medal in the Senior National Boxing Championship at Chennai today.

Assam Amateur Boxing Association secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita informed that Shiva defeated K Manikando of the host State 15-7 in the final.

Shiva, a promising boxer of the country who hails from the city won his first gold medal in the senior national and was also declared the best boxer in the meet.

He was a competitor in the 66 kg weight category.

Earlier, Shiva cemented his place in the final with a 3-2 win over V Durga Rao of Karnataka in the semifinal of the bantam weight category.

In the quarterfinals, Thapa ousted S Santosh Singh of Manipur.

Thapa, a gold medallist at the 2011 Belgrade winner tournament, amassed a three point lead in the opening round and held on to the advantage against Singh before winning the bout 9-5.
