Darjeeling, Dec. 11: The Gorkha Janmukti Yuwa Morcha today renewed the agitation for Gorkhaland with processions and public meetings in Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The youth wing of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha conducted the programmes on a day voting was held in five wards of Mirik municipality to decide the party’s fate.
The procession in Darjeeling started from near the railway station and after criss-crossing the town, ended at Chowk Bazar where the meeting was held.
“We had started the agitation in 2007 to bring about a change in the hills and to achieve Gorkhaland. The party (Morcha) was successful in bringing about a change (in the political scene) of the hills and we will not stop the agitation till we achieve Gorkhaland. The Centre must also take note of this development,” Jiten Rai, the vice-president of the Yuwa Morcha told the gathering.
The Yuwa Morcha had announced the resumption of the movement on November 22 after Uttar Pradesh Assembly had adopted a resolution to divide the state into four.
Priyabardan Rai, the general secretary of the Yuwa Morcha, said the course of the agitation would be announced by Morcha president Bimal Gurung at a meeting in Mungpoo on December18.
In Kalimpong, Yuwa Morcha supporters held a meeting at Damber Chowk and then took out a procession to RC Mintri Road.
The Morcha general secretary, Roshan Giri, said the agitation had the backing of the party.
“The agreement for the GTA was signed without dropping the demand for Gorkhaland. The same was mentioned in the agreement. The party supports the Yuwa Morcha agitation,” he said.
In Mirik, 79.79 per cent voting was recorded in the elections to five seats.
R.K. Jha, the returning officer and the Kurseong subdivisional officer, said there had been no complaints from anyone or reports of any untoward incident during the voting.
“Counting will start at 8.30am on December 13 at the block development office in Mirik,” he said.
