No more place in British army for 400 Gorkhas

As part of its restructuring process, the British army is set to ease out around 400 Gorkhas.

It is expected that there will be around 400 Gorkhas to be made redundant out of the 2,900 jobs to go, according to a British Embassy press release issued in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The Brigade of Gorkhas has been growing in size since modernisation in 2007 which also allowed them to serve for 22 years instead of 15, the release said.

The British government will issue 12 months' notice to all affected personnel and will be given a comprehensive programme of resettlement into civilian life and also help with future employment, the embassy said in the press release.

Reacting to the decision Treasurer of GAESO (Gorkha Army Ex-Serviceman's Organisation) Jit Bahadur Rai said that the move was in violation of the tripartite agreement reached between the Nepal government, UK government and Government of India in 1947.

UK cannot dismiss the British Gorkhas without asking the government of Nepal, he pointed out.
