North Bengal University: Probe team visits NBU

Siliguri, Jan. 3.TT: Members of a fact-finding team that arrived at North Bengal University today said they wanted to restore “normalcy” in the institution where administrative work had been hampered because of employees’ agitation.
“Situation at the varsity have not been normal for some time. We have come to restore normalcy and ensure that it continues to remain that way from now on,” said Abhirup Sarkar, chairman of the expert committee on higher education.
Sugata Marjit, the chairman of West Bengal Council for Higher Education, who is also in the team, said: “There is a problem at the varsity and students are the ones who will be affected by it. Our main aim is to ensure that the academic environment is restored.”
Around 300 staff of the NBU Employees’ Association had been demonstrating since November 9 to demand revision of salaries, promotions and recruitment of the kin of those who died in harness.
Although the academic departments were allowed to function, several administrative works were stalled because of the agitation.
The demonstration was withdrawn last week after higher education minister Bratya Basu assured the protesters that a probe team would look into the alleged irregularities. Vice chancellor Arunabha Basumajumdar, who did not attend office for 53 days, resumed duty yesterday.
The team members today met the members of several employees’ associations and student bodies.
Tomorrow, the officials will meet Basumajumdar, finance officer of the varsity and the controller of examinations before leaving for Calcutta.
