DARJEELING/SILIGURI, 6 FEB: The West Bengal Governor, Mr MK Narayanan (in sns photo), today said at New Jalpaiguri Station that the state government’s endeavour to resolve the Darjeeling Hills logjam through the instrumentality of the GTA agreement was sincere.
“We are determined to bring about enduring peace and all-round development in the restive Hills by executing the tripartite agreement in its letter and spirit,” he said, adding that he was willing to meet the GJMM leaders to clarify the state government’s positive stance on the matter.
He was talking to journalists at the station before leaving for Darjeeling on a personal trip.
He further assured the state government was looking seriously into the continuing crib deaths and farmers’ suicide across north Bengal. He is likely to spend three days in the Hill station.
Asked whether they would like to meet the Governor during his stay in Darjeeling, the GJMM general secretary, Mr Roshan Giri said they had presently no such plan. “The party president, Mr Bimal Gurung is now in Kalimpong. He would decide whether any of us would meet Mr Narayanan,” he said.
The Governor’s talk-gesture has, however, assumed significance with the GJMM recently raising Gorkhaland- cacophony even to the extent of hinting at burning the GTA copies in the coming days by way of venting resentment against what Mr Gurung termed deliberate strategy to tire them into submitting to the state government’s whims.
However, it is not clear whether the Governor has come here as an emissary of the state government to cool the frayed nerves or he has taken talk-posturing on his own.
