Pro GJMM group calls for indefinite bandh in Terrai, Dooars

Darjeeling, Apr 21: Terrai and Dooars Joint Co-ordination Committee, a pro-GJM organisation, today called for an indefinite bandh in the region from Monday in favour of the inclusion of plain areas in the proposed GTA bill.

The move of Joint Co-ordination Committe--a forum of 36 organisations favourable for the inclusion of Terai and Dooars into the GTA--came after Joint Action Committee's (JAC), an organisation ptotesting inclusion of plain area in the proposed bill, has called a bandh on Saturday.

The co-ordination committee has, however, cancelled the public meeting, which was called to counter tomorrow's bandh, at Nagrakata, Dooars.

The public meeting was called off after an intervention from north Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb.

Earlier, the co-ordination committee had decided to postpone a two-day bandh on April 18-19 on the inclusion of Terai and Dooars in the proposed Gorkhaland Territorial Administration(GTA) following assurances from Mr Deb.

The high power committee, formed to look into the matter of inclusion of the Terai and Dooars in the GTA, is due to submit its report by the end of June and the elections to the GTA is slated to be held sometime towards the end of June or at the beginning of July. (UNI)
