Ring Tong tea garden to reopen soon

DARJEELING, 18 APRIL: The Darjeeling district magistrate has asked the owner of the Ring Tong tea plantation to clear liabilities worth around Rs 5.70 crore due to the workers accumulated since 1996 ~ the year the plantation was closed.
District magistrate Soumitra Mohan today said the planter, Mr Sushil Chowdhary, has been asked to clear the dues within a month. “This aside, we have asked him to re-open the plantation next Monday,” he added.
The GJMM-affiliated Darjeeling Terai Doars Plantation Labour Union today presented papers involving the demand of Rs 5.70 crore due to the tea workers at a meeting held in Darjeeling today convened by the district magistrate’s office. The DTDPLU leaders claimed the bill they placed today had been approved by the state government. The tea garden located at the outskirts of Darjeeling was closed in 1996 following a fire at the factory. However, tea plucking continued. In 2006, the DTDPLU shut it down, alleging that the planter was exploiting the workers. sns
