SILIGURI, 13 AUG: The Tea Board started counting small tea growers in North Dinajpur district.
The objective is to provide smart cards to the growers so that they can get assistance from the Tea Board and other financial institutions. The deputy director of Tea Board in Siliguri, Mr K K Bhattacharya, said: “Enumeration work will also begin in Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling Hills, Sikkim and parts of Bihar, where there are tea plantations.”
The Tea Board had organised a convention of small tea growers in Jalpaiguri recently and distributed only five smart cards to the small tea growers there.
The Tea Board will organise another convention of small tea growers in North Dinajpur in October.
Small tea growers had suffered huge crop losses due to storms and other natural calamities this year. Tea plantations were damaged when a Nor’easter lashed the tea belt and severe hailstorm hit the plantations. According to Tea Board officials, any small tea grower is entitled to obtain the smart card apart from members of self-help groups.
Several small tea growers have formed self-help groups in north Bengal to avail assistance from the Tea Board. A few of them associated with tea plantation have started setting up tea factories in Jalpaiguri district with the help of Tea Board.
