DARJEELING, 31 AUG: The Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (ILTA)
today decided to continue with their programme of honouring Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee with the title ‘Kintsoon Dartim’ (bestower of
good fortune) scheduled to be held at Mela Ground on 3 September in
Kalimpong. This is despite the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee having
announced ‘ghar bhitra junta’ (people inside their homes) stir during
the felicitation programme.
“The programme to felicitate the chief minister was fixed much before the current political turmoil had started in the Hills. We cannot defer it now,” said the ILTA president, L S Tamsang. He said the felicitation would in no way breach the inter-ethnic peace in the Hills as is being alleged by some.
“The Lepcha Development Board is meant for empowering the Lepchas, a backward community. We also feel that the state government is not using us as pawns to settle political scores,” he said, adding around 25,000 Lepchas are expected to gather for the felicitation. However, he declined to comment on the ‘ghar bhitra janta’ stir and its possible impact on the turnout.
The chief minister is scheduled to reach Kalimpong on 2 September ~ a day before the felicitation programme.
Meanwhile, principals of about 45 ICSE and ISC schools across the Hills met today in Darjeeling and decided to write to the Union home minister and request the Centre to intervene to solve the political tangle. sns
