Delhi: Jan Awaaz rejects GTA, focuses on Gorkhaland

Jan Awaaz rejects GTA, focuses on Gorkhaland
Jan Awaz, the newly-formed peoples’ group in Delhi, has demanded for Gorkhaland instead of sticking on to the GTA.
Jan Awaaz members on Saturday passed a resolution on the election of the new GTA chief at the International Conference Centre saying they have no comments to make as there is no interest in the GTA. Even so, Jan Awaaz has urged the political leadership and GTA Sabhasads to prove their sincerity by convening a meeting and passing a resolution for the creation of Gorkhaland along with the dissolution of the administrative setup.
To give a national shape to the organisation, Jan Awaaz members elected eminent journalist Joel Rai as the national president, activist and prominent statehood movement leader Munish Tamang as national general secretary, Sonam Bhutia as national treasurer, activist Sankalp Lama as national coordinator, Ashim Sunam as media coordinator and Supreet Pradhan as Delhi chapter president.
Munish Tamang said Jan Awaaz will now actively work towards membership enrolment on a pan-India basis and appoint coordinators for all regions. He pointed out the ‘Neta-Janta’ model has not proved to be successful as there has been a serious disconnect between the people’s voice and its representation by leaders. Leaders have been unable to correctly represent the people’s voice; hence the need to create a leadership that is Janta-based and led by the people themselves, said Tamang.
Joel Rai stressed on the need to create an all-India movement by the Indian Gorkhas rather than one that is Darjeeling-centric. He said people are crying out for change as the current leadership has failed to deliver their aspirations.(EOI)
