North Bengal Development minister Gautam
Deb today inaugurated the 4th Mahananda Bridge that joins Matigara to
Siliguri through Vivekananda Road.
The 160-metre bridge has been built at a
total cost of more than Rs10.88 crore. The foundation stone for the
construction was laid on February 8, 2008 and the Siliguri Jalpaiguri
Development Authority took up work on the bridge two months later. The
functioning of the bridge is expected to ease traffic in the Airview
More area of Hill Cart Road by a considerable extent.
Addressing the gathering, Deb said the
bridge will help residents of Matigara and adjacent areas reach Siliguri
in a very short time. He added a fund of Rs3.73 lakh has been
sanctioned to build a 2.88km road in the area that will include
repairing of culverts and relocation of electricity poles. Further, the
minister informed chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit
North Bengal, including Siliguri, on October 24 and meet with him and
other administrative heads to discuss development issues for the region.(EOI)
