Darjeeling: 12-hour transport strike peaceful
Darjeeling/ Kurseong, 3 October
Amid tight security, the 12-hour transport strike called by the GJMM affiliate for the transporters passed off peacefully in the Hills today. However, the strike failed to impact normal life as government and private offices, educational institutions and banks functioned normally. The regular transport services were disrupted though.
The coordination committee of the All Transport Joint Action Committee (ATJAC) affiliated to the GJMM had called today’s transport strike from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to demand immediate release of the arrested functionaries of the unit ~ its president, Mr Narbu Lama and secretary, Mr Pramod Srimal who are now behind bars.
The committee had exempted ambulances, hearses, wedding vans and the press vans from the ambit of the strike. Vehicles carrying students, milk and water were not, however, exempted.
Students, teachers and the employees of the public and private sectors were found trudging their ways to their destinations in absence of transport. The attendance figures of the students and the employees were a bit less than on the normal days.
“The students from the outskirts of Darjeeling like Sukhia Pokhari, Sonada, 6th Mile, 3rd Mile were absent due to the strike. Other students from tea plantations and the nearby places made it on foot,” said a principal of a school based in Darjeeling.
According to the teachers, about six to seven per cent of the students could not make it today.
The Darjeeling district magistrate, Mr Punit Yadav, said: “The attendance at the government offices was almost normal.”
Notably, 53 syndicates affiliated to the ATJAC had formed the coordination committee in a meeting held on 1 October.
However, the full impact of the bandh was not seen in Kurseong Town region as light vehicles plied freely.
