The
abrupt surge in the activities of the Gorkha National Liberation Front
in the rural areas of the hills has started creating a stir among
political parties here. The hoisting of the GNLF flag today in Samalbong
area under No. 42 constituency led to a tense situation in the area.
GJM supporters have accused GNLF activists of trying to disrupt peace in
the region and filed an FIR at the Kalimpong police station. In
response, GNLF supporters have filed a counter FIR against GJM activists
accusing them of trying to cause unrest.
GNLF leader Hem Kumar Tamang, the former
village chief of Samalbong, accused GJM leaders Guman Singh Tamang, Nar
Bahadur Tamang, Kamal Sharma and others of threatening his party men.
He claimed they had threatened to tear GNLF flags and vandalise their
property and physically assault GNLF supporters. “They also mistreated
female members of my family,” accused Hem Kumar.
