With
the state government forming the Lepcha Development Council,
aspirations are high among members of the Tamang community for a similar
setup of their own. The chief minister has also given positive vibes to
the issue and the community has become increasingly confident of soon
getting a Tamang development council. The Mirik block committee of the
Tamang Youth Association, the wing spearheading the demand, today held a
meeting at Manju Gairi Gaon to discuss the formation of a Tamang
Development Council.
Organisation president Vishnu Golay, general secretary Sanjay Moktan, Mirik block president Anurag Moktan and secretary Dinesh Moktan were present along with representatives from Bijanbari, Kurseong, Siliguri and Kalimpong.
Prominent member Ganesh Tamang announced total support from his side for the formation of such a council. He claimed the council will have an extensive role to play in the preservation and promotion of the Tamang tribe, its language and culture.
The proposed Tamang Development Council is expected to be announced by chief minister Mamata Banerjee at a function scheduled in Mirik in January next year. (EOIC)
