Bal Suraksha Abhiyan reports children unsafe in Kalimpong
A survey report by child rights organisation Bal Suraksha Abhiyan has revealed children in Kalimpong are at risk of potential child right violations.

The NGO shared the information about the survey with media persons at an interactive session held today at the Ashadip Bhawan here at 8th Mile.

According to the survey conducted on 1,000 people, 37 per cent believe children in town are unsafe. Meanwhile, 41 per cent or 374 respondent children said they feel insecure.

Citing the findings of the survey, the BSA stressed that apart from NGOs, the media and civil society must also step forward to fulfill the duties on their part to uphold children’s rights.

BSA director Sr. Suvesna Thapa, activist Tejkumar Thapa, Anugyalaya director Father Valentine Rai and NGO First Mumbai Program firector Kishore Bhamare were present at the interactive programme along with several journalists.

Sr Thapa said people have expressed mixed opinions on being asked what measures could be taken to curb violence against children. She informed 20 per cent of the respondents said issues such as child rights, gender equality and sex education should be incorporated in the school syllabus. Some have suggested the matter should be highlighted among the public through mass awareness programmes, while others have stressed the police and administration must be more vigilant and active apart from concerned NGOs.

BSA activists stressed the issue of child rights and security has to be carried forward as an agenda of social justice. They also urged the media to take actively participate in the movement against child right violations.

Acknowledging that the child rights movement must be intensified in the region, media personnel also came up with suggestions to the BSA while pledging to play their part in the matter.

The BSA director said the BSA will announce a child rights awareness movement on Republic Day christened “We for Child Rights”. She added the campaign will strive to integrate as many people as possible in the direction of a society free from child right violation. (EOIC)
