Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung today announced he will attend
the January 30 programme of the Trinamool Congress at the Brigade ground
in Kolkata. He told this to the media in Kurseong at the foundation
laying ceremony for the Giddepahar-Rohini passenger ropeway.
"I have been invited to attend a TMC programme in Kolkata on January 30. Some central committee leaders of the party will also be along. I will leave tomorrow," informed Gurung.
Sources said chief minister Mamata Banerjee had invited the GJM chief to the TMC event when she was in Darjeeling a few days ago.
Confirming this, GJM assistant secretary Binay Tamang, who was also present at the foundation ceremony, said, "The CM invited us to the programme during her three-day visit to the hills."
The ropeway project, one among a few such in the pipeline, is estimated to cost Rs4 crore in its first phase. A similar project is being planned from Rohini to the Kurseong bus terminus.
"The central government has already sanctioned Rs4 crore in the initial phase and more funds will be released when work commences," explained Gurung, adding more development projects will be taken up going forward.
Party sources have said the GJM leadership will sit for a meeting on February 5 to take a call on the forthcoming Lok Sabha election. But when asked, Gurung refused to comment, saying it would be taken up on a later date.
"There is still some time for the election. All decisions will be taken on the February 5 meeting," he said.
The GJM had supported BJP veteran Jaswant Singh in the last Lok Sabha polls and he had won by a huge margin from the Darjeeling constituency. This time around, speculation is rife of a GJM-TMC alliance given the present political scenario in the hills. (EOIC)
