The
Tamang Youth Association, which has been spearheading the movement for a
Tamang Development Council, is all set to host a two-day long Tamang
National Convention in Mirik beginning January 20.
In a press release issued today, TYA general secretary Sanjay Moktan and publicity secretary Nima Yonjon have appealed to all members of the community to attend the convention. They said chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be present as the chief guest on the second day of the convention.
The TYA leaders said the inaugural day will host a special delegates’ session followed by the introduction of the Tamang language in the curriculum of state-run schools. On January 21, an open session will be held at the Mirik lakeside where Banerjee will be present as the chief guest accompanied by special guests MP Mukul Roy and North Bengal Development minister Gautam Deb.
The release further said the organisation is optimistic about the formation of the TDC with the CM announcing this when she delivers her address. The TYA said it has already submitted petitions to Banerjee on two occasions and has received positive assurances from her.
Led by the TYA president, the organisation also conducted a poster-pasting campaign at Dambar Chowk and Main Road to promote the forthcoming event.(EOI)
