Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has decided not to support former Indian Football Captain Bhaichung Bhutia as the candidate from Darjeeling constituency in the upcoming parliamentary election this year.
Dr Harkabahadur Chhetri while speaking to EOI from Kolkata said, “Bhaichung is not from Darjeeling, he is from Sikkim and now enough is enough, we will not support any outsiders to be the candidate from Darjeeling constituency.” The party had supported many non-local candidates in the past and is looking to field a local candidate this time, he added.
He further said that Bhutia is a footballer and not a politician and it would be inappropriate to field him in the elections. When asked if GJM is planning to field their own candidate, Chhetri said the party will decide on the possibility soon.
Speculations are made that CM Mamata Banerjee might discuss about the parliamentary candidature with GJM chief Bimal Gurung during her upcoming visit to North Bengal from January 20.
According to the political observers, TMC has almost zero chance of winning the election without the support of GJM in the hills, and the Chief Minister will try hard to convince Bimal Gurung.
Earlier, North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb refused to comment on the candidature of Bhaichung for the parliamentary election from Darjeeling. He only said party would be fielding candidates in all the 42 constituencies of West Bengal.
Bhaichung in an interview with a national daily few days back said “I think, we need more sportsmen to join politics, as corruption has increased a lot and most of the politicians are not being seen in a very positive light. So, if sportsmen are being inducted in poll plans then it's good.”(EOI)
