Kurseong, 5 May : The transport strike in Kurseong called by Janmukti Chalak Mahasangh-a
GJMM affiliate- going on since 2 May would be withdrawn tomorrow. The
decision was taken following a meeting between the administration and
the association of the agitating drivers at the
Kurseong sub- divisional office today.
Talking to the reporters, JCM president, Tilak Gurung said the breakthrough came in course of the meeting convened by the Kurseong SDO, U Swaroop. He further informed that during the meeting, the GTA member, Yogendra Rai, police and traffic officials aside from the representatives from different drivers' associations and syndicates were present.
He said they had had a long discussion over the grievances and suggestions of the drivers over the new traffic rule. " Both the administration and the drivers' association have agreed to come up with a better traffic rule for Kurseong. Some changes have been agreed to by the administration in the newly crafted rule. Some changes have been made on the number of vehicles to be parked as well as on the no- entry zones. Hence, our decision to lift the ongoing transport bandh from tomorrow," he said. As per the Kurseong SDO, some grievances and suggestions had been placed by the agitators over the new traffic move. "Some changes have been agreed to and addendum would be incorporated. However, the new traffic rule would be executed fully," he said.
Notably, protesting against the new traffic rule being implemented in Kurseong since 2 April, JCM had called an indefinite transport bandh in Kurseong from the same day. As per the Mahasangh, the new traffic move is not passenger- and driver- friendly. As a result of the strike, all the vehicles affiliated to the Kurseong-based syndicates had remained off the roads for the past four days. Even the school buses, vehicles carrying milk and water were not spared(SNS)
