Darjeeling Sikkim observes World Anti Drug Day: The International Anti Drugs Day was
today observed in Kalimpong, Panitanki and other parts of the hills by
various social organisation to spread the awareness against the evil
practice and also to eradicate it completely from the society.
In Kalimpiong, the Himalayan Anti AIDS
and Anti Nicotine Drugs Society to conducted a poster campaign to spread
awareness about drug abuse. The society put up posters with slogans
denouncing the usage of drugs across the length and breadth of the town.
The society has been conducting various awareness campaigns against
drug abuse and for the welfare of drug edicts since a long time.
The society’s convenor Niriyas Mukhiya
said drug users cannot be treated with medication, they need to be
rehabilitated through strict procedures. Further, awareness and
spreading the knowledge about the bad effects of drugs should be given
priority by everyone. “Drug abuse is a personal and metal ailment and
the people who use such substances are unaware of the importance of
living life. They feel constantly lonely and separate themselves from
the society, family, love and everything else which is important in
life,” Mukhiya explained.
Meanwhile, the Naksalbari-Panitanki unit
of social organisation Gana Unnayan Parshad conducted an awareness
campaign through a rally to mark the International Anti Drugs Day in
Panitanki. The rally urged the people to be aware of the bad effects of
drug abuse to make the society drugs free. The rally was also attended
by SSB personnel from Kadamani post. The rally culminated at the new
Panitanki bus stand where an awareness programme was conducted. GUP
member Tarun Kumar Biswas said everyone should work together to keep
youngsters away from drug abuse and to make the society free of drugs.
Similar events to mark the International
Anti Drugs Day were also held across the hills including Darjeeling,
Mirik, Kurseong and other places.
Namchi Sikkim observes World Anti Drug Day
Namchi-based Hope Foundation today
observed World Anti Drug Day promoting the messages – ‘Think health not
drugs’ and ‘Drugs misuse disorder is preventable and treatable – at the
Namchi Senior Secondary School. Sponsored by the Sikkim State Aids
Control Society, the event was attended by DSP (District Prison) Aaron
G. Targen, the chief guest of the occasion.
Targen cautioned students on the
ill-effects of drug abuse and urged them to stay far from such
substances, saying their future and lives could be destroyed. He said a
stringent law has been enacted by the state against drug abusers and
peddlers.
A quiz competition was organised among
students of classes X, XI and XII. Conducted by project counselor Anjana
JL Chettri, the competition saw Class XII in first position, Class X in
second and Class XI in the third.
Hope Foundation project manager Manish
Subba highlighted the objectives of the association and enlightened the
students about drug abuse and life-threatening habits. (EOIC)
