Two telecom techies from Kolkata were
killed in a road mishap near Birik Dara under Kalimpong sub-division
along NH-31 A last night. The deceased have been identified as Partha
Chaterjee (30) from Hoogli and Rajesh Singh (34) from Purlia in Kolkata.
Both were employees of a mobile company and were travelling from Sikkim
to Siliguri. The Tata Sumo car on which the duo were travelling fell
almost 200 feet down a cliff, killing them both on the spot. The driver
of the vehicle, Dilip Gupta, from Lava in Kalmipong sustained major
injuries and has been admitted to Kalimpong Sub-divisional hospital.
The two techies were inspecting their
company’s telecom towers and were travelling from Darjeeling to
Jorethang in Silkkim and were on their way to Siliguri via Melli,
according to Dilip. He said a truck coming from the other side failed to
use the dipper, due to which he could not see the curve ahead and the
car plunged straight down the hill. The bodies of the deceased will be
handed over to company officials after the postmortem, police sources
informed.(EOIC)
