Two persons were killed and two others severely injured on Tuesday morning when the vehicle they were in dropped nearly 20 metres from the road near the Singla-Jamuney crossing at Tukvar 4th Division in Darjeeling. The dead have been identified as Singla residents Buddhimaya Rai (55) and her daughter-in-law Poonam Rai (28). Meanwhile, driver Jugal Limboo (19) and passenger Gorey Rai (64) are under treatment at the Darjeeling district hospital.
The police said the mishap occurred around 8am at the Zero Point area in the Singla-Jamuney crossing, about 15km from Darjeeling. “The vehicle was heading towards Darjeeling town from Singla. It appears the driver lost control and the vehicle veered off the road and dropped some 20 metres. To people died on the spot while two others have been admitted at the district hospital with head and leg injuries,” said an officer of the Sadar police station.
According to Poonam’s sister Susmita Tamang who was also in the vehicle but emerged unscathed, the steering wheel suddenly loosened and came off in the driver’s hands when they approached a sharp turn near the Zero Point area. She said, “The vehicle had to take a turn when the steering wheel came off. The driver had already steered for the turn and was helpless. We tumbled down from the road.”
The vehicle was carrying nine passengers including a school girl who got injured on her head and ear areas. However, she is said to be out of danger now. The bodies of the two deceased were handed over to family members after conducting a post mortem. (EOIC)
