Demand for Gorkhaland gains momentum in Darjeeling
Guwahati: The demand for Gorkhaland has begun to reverberate in the hills of Darjeeling, Terai and Dooars with the signing of Bodo peace accord in New Delhi earlier last month which created the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The Binay Tamang faction of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) on Wednesday put up posters across the Darjeeling Hills asking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to explain what it meant by "finding a permanent political solution to the issue" of the region.
Speaking with EastMojo, Dr Munish Tamang, national working president, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP) said that on the grounds the situation is both of hope and apprehension, but mostly there is an expectation that after Bodoland, it is their turn next.

Tamang added that largely, people are expecting that something is around the corner.
Meanwhile, the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), an ally of BJP has once again raised the demand for inclusion of the region under the sixth schedule.
With the passage of Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 last year, the party has revived its demand for the status, as the new citizenship law is not applicable to the sixth schedule area.
Also, for the permanent solution for the region as promised by BJP in its poll manifesto, the political demands for GNLF, other than statehood, at least sixth schedule status.
BGP's Tamang, however, clarified that there is no such indication from the Centre, but the signing of the Bodo peace accord has fueled a lot of expectations in the region.
