Darjeeling: Darjeeling Hills and Kalimpong witnessed a complete shutdown on Sunday. Complimenting the state government's order for a lockdown in Municipal areas of the state, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration has also ordered a lockdown of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik from 4 pm on March 23 till March 27. Darjeeling Hills have witnessed closedown of all hues and durations in the past, the longest being 104 days in 2017. However, the closure on Sunday to check the advances of the dreaded Coronavirus was complete different in nature.
"The earlier closedowns were political in nature. This shutdown is relating to our very survival. We should all act responsibly and do as the government instructs" stated Indra Chettri, a local resident. Hardly anyone ventured out on the streets on Sunday in the Hills. Even the Mall (Chowrasta), the main public square of the town, wore a deserted look. "The state government and GTA have ordered a lockdown. However, there is no need to panic. All emergency services and shops selling emergency commodities like groceries and milk will remain open. However, we urge the people not to venture out unless absolutely necessary. All public transports will remain closed. Any persons found violating shall be deemed to have committed an offence punishable under Section 188 of the IPC. All administrative and police heads are authorised to take all necessary measures for enforcement and implementation," stated Anit Thapa, chairman, GTA.
