Kolkata, June 7 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday said the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) launched its Gorkhaland movement to dislodge the Left Front government and asked why it did not agree to the peace agreement offered by the then Left Front government.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday claimed that the over two-decade-old contentious issue of a separate Gorkhaland in the state's northern part had been resolved and an agreement signed.
The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, spearheading the demand, however said it has not gone back on its demand.
"I don't know why they did not agree with the same terms we had offered. Like the present state government, we had also suggested more powers for the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC). Actually we feel that the main aim of GJM was to dislodge the Left Front government. So they did not agree to our terms," CPI-M leader Ashok Bhattacharya said.
"Both the Maoist movement and Gorkhaland movement have stopped after Left Front government has been dislodged so common people have various questions within them," he said.
