GJM has backstabbed Darjeeling people, say opposition parties

Darjeeling, Jun 9 (PTI) Opposition parties in the Darjeeling hills today accused Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) of backstabbing the people there by diluting the Gorkhaland demand while signing an agreement with West Bengal government.
The GJM had betrayed the people of the hills who had overwhelmingly voted for the party in the recent Assembly polls for its promise to carve out a separate state of Gorkhaland, they said.
Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxist (CPRM) president R B Rai cautioned the people against GJM''s "true attitude" to the Gorkhaland issue as it has kept the problem out of the purview of the meeting in Kolkata with the state government on Tuesday.
"It is the people of the hills who have given the GJM popular support in the last Assembly polls and now it is the people who should be cautious," Rai observed.
The proposed administrative set-up to be put in place as per the agreement would be even weaker than the Sixth Schedule Council proposed by Subash Ghisingh, he pointed out.
The GJM had put aside its demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland and agreed to a new hill council with more autonomy in a bipartite agreement signed with the West Bengal government.
