East Bengal's Nirmal Chettri Delighted To Organise Football Awareness Camp In South Sikkim

East Bengal defender Nirmal Chettri recently conducted a four day football awareness camp from June 22 to 25 in Melli, South Sikkim.
In a convesation with Goal.com, the the 20-year-old revealed that it was always one of his desires to have a camp in his hometown.
"I was always trying to take the initiative [to organise a football camp] from long back, but due to my busy schedule I could not do it," he said.
He continued,"This time, before coming back, I talked to a few good friends with whom I used to play alongside. I thought it would be good for me if I could contribute, so I thought may be if I had a camp the kids could get a small stage for their future."
"The camp was supposed to be for only two days, but I got it extended for another two days so that more children could come in," Chettri affirmed.

"There were children from Melli and surrounding regions. My brother's son was the youngest one in the camp," he added.

Nirmal Chettri was overjoyed by the interest shown by the youngsters and expects to draw sponsors to conduct a camp on an annual basis.
"Looking and playing with the boys, it reminded me of my childhood and it's an opportunity for me to share my knowledge. Being in touch with football is pretty good.
"I'm thinking of having a week's camp every year and I have also asked for sponsors. I have many sponsors who I'm talking to and some of them are ready to support the cause," he said.

It is also learned that United Kurseong Football Club (UKFC), a renowned football team based in the town of Kurseong in Darjeeling district, wants to felicitate the efforts of Nirmal Chettri.

Chettri said, "I'm also looking forward to speak directly with the Kalimpong Sports Association (KSA) in the second week of July to discuss future plans."

The KSA is known to organise it's own league in the form of two divisions, with the Kalimpong Football Academy playing in the Super Division.

"It will be good if the boys who are brilliant get a chance to play in the academy and grow step by step," the East Bengal defender said optimistically.

Further talking about his own future, he claimed to be happy with the Red and Gold brigade.

"The moment I signed for East Bengal, I wanted to win matches and trophies for the team which will also be good for my achievements. It's almost three years now for me over there and the last season was the best for me despite a few injuries."

Speaking about his prospects in the senior national team, the former Air India player opined, "When Bob [Houghton] was there, I almost got in, but due to injuries I missed my chance. The current coach (Armando Colaco) is a master of Indian football."

The former India U-23 defender, who did not make it into the 42 probables for the ongoing national camp, praised India's interim coach and pledged to give his best when he gets a chance to play for the India seniors.

"I'm not feeling bad for not being a part of the team. Everybody who are in right now, deserve to be there. I will wait patiently for my turn and when I get a chance, I will try to give my 100%," he said.
