Gangtok, July 24 Ugen Gurung has left to represent India in the 6th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship scheduled to be held in Russia from 29 to 31 July. Ugen is a member of 5-member Indian team for the championship. He will be taking part in the junior individual category. A total of 192
countries have been taking part in the championship. 17 years old Ugen is the member of Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association and studying in class XII at Holy Cross.He shared that this championship is also selection for the test event for upcoming Olympics. It was informed that top 16 from this championship will be selected for the Olympic test event scheduled to be held in London later this year.He was the semi-finalist in the World Taekwondo Championship at Korea in December last year, he also participated in the 5th World Taekwondo Poomsea Championship held at Uzbekistan last year, and he won gold in the 3rd Commonwealth Poomsea Championship earlier this year.The SATA has expressed its best wishes to Ugen in a small function yesterday at White Hall complex.Ugen mentioned that a 15-day long training at Korea helped him lot in his performances and also increased his standard. He hoped to achieve success for the country and the state.The SATA president, YB Thapa, has mentioned that it was a proud moment that a boy from a small state has been selected to represent India and it was an achievement for Sikkim’s people.He encouraged others to follow Ugen to be successful and to make the state and the country proud. Likewise, joint secretary SATA, Rajen Subba, also expressed his best wishes on behalf of the people of Sikkim.
