CITU leader, shot dead in Siliguri

Siliguri, Jul 31 : Unidentified gunmen shot dead a CITU activist and critically injured another at a regulated market in Champasari near here last night, police said today.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar Pal said tension ran high at Siliguri Regulated Market under Pradhannagar police station after a gang of miscreants shot dead Surendra Yadav (35), who hails from Bihar, and critically wounded his relative Raju yadav (38) at the midnight last night.
Raju Yadav has been admitted to a private nursing home at Matighara with bullet injuries on head and chest.
Panic gripped the area after the incident and market was closed following the shootout, he said, adding police picket was installed to instill confidence in the traders as well as the local people.
The DSP said two suspects have been arrested in this connection and added further investigation was on.
The shooting incident was a sequel to an ongoing tussle to lord over the union of the regulated market, the main supplier of vegetables in the region, the DSP stated.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) has called for a 12-hour bandh in this sub-division tomorrow to protest the incident, while former urban development minister Ashok Bhattacharya led a half-an hour a Road blockade Hashmi Chowk, the heart of Siliguri early this morning.
Mr Bhattacharya, in a memorandum submitted to the DSP, said such problems have increased since Trinamool Congress-Congress came to the power.
