Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) -- a Unesco World Heritage site -- was hit badly by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that left a trail of destruction in Sikkim and northern West Bengal on Sunday.
Services of the popular Toy Train were disrupted following the earthquake. Though services on the picturesque route leading to one of the most popular hill stations, Darjeeling, were partially restored after the quake, it was yet to become fully operational.
Landslides triggered by quake and heavy rainfall have literally derailed the Toy Train, which has figured in many Bollywood blockbusters.
Starting from New Jalpaiguri, the train has currently been operating up to only Rangtong as journey beyond this station was not possible because of blocked tracks. Work has been on in full swing to clear the debris lining the tracks.
Heavy boulders have been causing an obstruction in restoration. Emergency teams were trying to fully restore the damaged tracks and resume services on the 86 km route.
The narrow gauge railway track has not suffered much damage so the repair teams were hopeful of resuming full operations soon.
