SILIGURI, 21 SEPT: The chief minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee, today asked state government officials to immediately identify the bodies of the migrant labourers from West Bengal, who have died in last Sunday’s earthquake in Sikkim.
Speaking to reporters here today, Miss Banerjee said: “I have heard that at least 14 labourers, who were working with the Teesta Urja ~ the flagship hydro-electricity project in Sikkim ~ have died during the trembler. Their bodies must be traced and brought to their near ones. ”
“Several labourers from Bengal and Bihar have died in the quake. I have asked the administrative officials to confirm the deaths and make other necessary arrangements. As per the figures that we have received, nine labourers from West Bengal and five from Bihar have died in the quake in Sikkim. We have already spoken to the Centre and requested it to provide helicopters so that we can bring the bodies to their homes. At the same time, the copters may be used to bring the injured to the hospitals here for better treatment,” she said.
She said several labourers from Islampur in north Dinajpur had been in Sikkim last Sunday. “They are yet to be traced. The same is the case with those from the Dabgram-Fulbari area. They must be traced. The rescue operation has been going on in full swing. But there are several places in the remote areas in north Sikkim where the rescue team has not yet reached. However, more than 10 Bengali tourists have been rescued from the quake-hit areas in Sikkim,” the chief minister said.
“We would review the situation after receiving complete information,” she added.
“I have visited several quake-hit areas spread over Kurseong and Kalimpong sub-divisions. The National Highway 31-A must be restored immediately. The Border Road Organisation has been trying day in and day out to have the lifeline of Sikkim restored,” she said.
According to the chief minister, nine persons have died in the quake in north Bengal. “The police confirmed that four persons died in the quake while five others died in heart collapse during the trembler,” she said.
