Kolkata, Dec 9: The West Bengal has cancelled the license of AMRI Hospital after at least 89 people died from suffocation from a massive fire that engulfed the super-specialty hospital located in Kolkata’s Dhakuria’s area.
Six board members of the hospital that caught fire on Friday were also arrested by the police on charges of negligence.
The arrests came hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed his grief over the loss of lives in the tragedy.
Dr. Singh has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs. two lakh each to the kin of the persons deceased and Rs. 50,000 each to those seriously injured from the Prime Minister''s National Relief Fund.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who assessed the situation at the hospital earlier in the day, had described the tragedy as a case of negligence and as ‘an unforgivable crime’. She vowed to give ‘the harshest punishment possible’ for the guilty.
