Guwahati: December 14, 2011: Promising young Indian pugilist Shiva Thapa from Assam recently clinched the historic gold medal in Chennai at the Sahara 58th Senior Men National Boxing Championship early this month.
Besides several organizations and individuals of Assam and the Northeast, the All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) the apex organization of Gorkha youths and students hailed Shiva Thapa’s feat in a central executive meet presided by Jagadish Khanal president AAGSU, held at Odalguri recently.
‘Shiva proved himself to be an asset of the nation with his feats since he was a kid boxer. His outstanding performances in the world junior boxing championship, youth Olympics and several other national and international games are testimony of this boxer to be a asset of the nation. After he stepped in senior section, representing the state and won the historic gold medal recently, the people of Assam is proud of him and has lots of expectation. One ultimate dream for any athlete would be to represent his state and nation in the Olympics. Shiva Thapa is acquainted with all talents to make it big but as said earlier on several occasions by his father (manager-cum-coach) Padam Thapa, that financial constraint could be only obstacle for the exuberance boxer.’ , AAGSU General Secretary Keshab Sharma in an statement said while appealing the state government for financial aids to the young boxer.
Nanda Kirati Dewan, Information and Publicity Secretary AAGSU while talking to this correspondent over phone from Guwahati said, ‘AAGSU will accord a public felicitation to the champion boxer at the 36th Foundation Day observation cum 37th bi-nenial conference of Odalgiri Dist. AAGSU (then Darrang Gorkha Students Union formed in 1946) on 27th Dec 2011 that will be observed at Bandarguri at Odalguri.’, he further added that, ‘Shiva Thapa is an asset of our state Assam and the nation. He is also a medal hope at the Olympics. State Government must have bestowed Shiva Thapa with both cash and kind so that the talented boxer could prepare himself for bringing more accolades and glory to the state. Tarun Gogoi governments have so far shown stepson attitude towards Shiva Thapa despite several request by the boxer and his family in the past.’
Lambasting at state sports ministry the youth leader further pointed, ‘Jayanta Talukdar represents Jharkand in Archery; state government awarded him handsome cash for his achievements. Mahadev Deka Mr. Universe was given both cash and kind on his arrival. No doubt they are our state’s pride, Govt. must felicitate them.
Abinav Bindra, gold medalist at Olympics was awarded with 5 lac cash by the state government; it is a welcome move and encouraging for sports fraternity but I don’t understand why the government have not yet bestowed cash and kind to the young promising talented boxer. My appeal to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is to immediately declare a financial award of Rs.5 lakh atleast as part of felicitation cum encouragement to the pugilist who is state’s asset and medal hope at the Olympics for the nation.’ Appreciating NRL a PSU under Govt. of India’s move Dewan said, ‘We are thankful to Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) for a noble gesture and bringing some relief by sponsoring a part of his training program till London Olympics’,
