Vijay Diwas was celebrated in Shillong, marking victory of Indian
Armed Forces over Pakistan Forces 40 years ago culminating
into creation of Bangladesh.
Major General V Saraswat led the celebration by laying the wreath at the War Memorial in Pine Walk Area in the city. A colorful ceremonial parade was also conducted by the ceremonial guards of 58 Gorkha Training centre.
To commemorate the Victory of our great nation over Pakistan in 1971 and in dedication to the memory of personnel of all three services who laid down their lives for their Motherland, “Vijay Diwas” is celebrated on 16 December each year.
The day also marks the anniversary of the unconditional surrender of 90,000 troops of Pakistan to Indian Armed Forces in 1971 and the subsequent formation of Bangladesh.
Vijay Diwas was commemorated today at War memorial Chennai Major General Subroto Mitra, General Officer Commanding, Andhra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala Area, Commodore Amar K Mahadevan, Naval Officer-in-Charge, Tamil Nadu and Pudduchery and Air Commodore PK Bapat, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Avadi, remembering the profound and selfless service of the armed forces personnel, Air Commodore P.K. Bhapat called upon the air warriors to rededicate themselves towards their duty in safe guarding the nation.
It is to be noted that the Indian Air force base at Avadi played a significant role during operations of IAF in the 1971 war as well as during Kargil Operations in 1999. Being a logistics hub, supply of safety and storage equipment during war was carried out by this base.
