DARJEELING 30 JAN: Relatives of the murdered employee of Hotel Meghma alleged that waiter Mohammad Mustaffa had been victimised as he had refused to hand over the keys of the bank to the convict.
Assistant manager Sandip Rai was allegedly killed for witnessing the murder. The relatives have demanded compensation from Canara Bank.
Sources said a major reason behind the murder was lack of security on the bank premises. The bank, which is located at Gandhi road, does not have any armed guard or CCTV. They were also nonchalant enough for having left the keys with an outsider.
It is a government rule that every bank has to install a security system. Mustaffa was handed the bank’s back-door keys for using water from the bank as he was also a sweeper at the bank.
The victim's relatives today gheraoed the bank demanding compensation. Branch manager Debashish Dey said the compensation will be paid but before that certain official formalities would have to be completed at the head office in Kolkata. “I have written to the head office and we are waiting for their reply. However, the amount that will be provided to the victim's familiy has not been specified.”
Mr Dey added “We have urged our management to provide security and an arrangment with made soon. It is just two months that the bank has been functioning in Darjeeling and some of the works are still underconstruction.”
The two convicts involved in the murder ~ Shakti Mondol (21) and Sanju Rai (22) ~ are residents of Kawakhali in Siliguri. They were arrested yesterday by the Darjeeling police.
One of the convict had previously worked as a carpenter at the bank and knew that Mustaffa had the keys of the bank. Their plan was to rob the bank and kill Mustaffa and Sandip. However, their mission failed and they had to leave empty-handed as the bank never kept the cash inside the branch.
