SILIGURI, 30 JAN: Sex workers today staged an agitation in protest against raids conduced by police in the brothel at Khalpara in Siliguri today.
Police raided the brothel to get detailed information about sex workers. But the sex workers tried to prevent them from doing so in fear of being identified.
The sex workers, under the banner of the Durbar Mahila Samanway Committee (DMSC), staged a demonstration in protest against the incident.
“Mr Mahesh Singh, the officer-in-charge of Khalpara police outpost, had sought detailed records of the sex workers around a month ago. But we refused to do so. We told him that if we provide all the information to police then the girls can be identified, which we do not want. No one is willing to provide information about herself. We requested the police that we are unable to give the details. But today police came with a huge force and raided the area. We strongly protest the incident and we may serve a deputation to the chief minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee, during her proposed visit to Siliguri on 10 February,” said a member of the branch of DMSC, Ms Mithu Chakrabarty. Ms Chakrabarty said they informed the chief advisor of DMSC, Kolkata, Dr Smarajit Jana, and they are expected to arrive in Siliguri tomorrow to decide the future course of action.
“The incident cannot be tolerated. We have informed Dr Jana and they
are expected to come here tomorrow. We will discuss and decide the future course of action," she added.
Denying the charge the additional superintendent of police, Siliguri, Mr Amit P Javalgi, has said police had some information that a girl seems to have been trafficked from Sikkim for flesh trade here. “We have the information that a Sikkim girl might have been trafficked so police raided the brothel to locate her," he added.
