Sikkim Tourism Still Facing Effects of Earthquake

Sikkim tourism is finding it hard to recover from the last year's devastating earthquake. To revive tourism, government of Sikkim has decided to take several steps to bring tourist arrivals to pre earthquake level.

Sikkim was hit by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in September. Hundreds of people died in the earthquake and several buildings were destroyed. The earthquake was followed by the landslides that blocked several important routes including Nathula Pass. It took army several days to reopen the Nathula Pass for traffic.

Since the earthquake tourism hasn't managed to recover in the state. Tour Operators blame state government for doing very little to encourage tourists. Sikkim tourism ministry did very little to spread awareness about the situation in the state.

According to tour operators, government made very little effort to tell tourists that Sikkim is once again opened to welcome them. However it seems that government has finally woken up. State government has announced year long tourism recovery mission to revive the industry to pre earthquake levels.

Several festivals will be organized throughout the year to attract tourists to Sikkim. The first festival will be Snow and Culture Festival that will be held in February. This will be followed by Sikkim Youth Adventure Festival in March. Apart from the festivals, Indian Soccer legend Bhaichung Bhutia will also promote Sikkim tourism to help state recover from the earthquake.
