National Commission for Women,New Delhi visits Sikkim

GANGTOK, March 10 – Mamta Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women, New Delhi, returned back yesterday after a 6-day visit to the State.
She inaugurated the three day workshop on ‘Anti-Human Trafficking – training for trainers’ being organised by Police department, under the aegis of BPR&D, New Delhi.
Human Trafficking is an organised crime whose victims are mainly women and children. It is the second largest crime after drug trafficking. India is a source, transit and destination for victims trafficked for different forms of exploitation.
While addressing the inaugural session, Mamta Sharma said that human trafficking is the criminal practice of exploitation and trading in people. Combating and preventing of human trafficking requires special skills and efforts.
Lack of education especially amongst women and children is the main cause behind this crime, she added. She mentioned that growth and development takes place through education, therefore, it is necessary to educate and aware the people at the grassroot level. She also emphasised on the awarenesss to be created through regional languages as well. “Female foeticide is the main problem in the country and to further prevent this crime, male mentality should be changed”, said the Chairperson.
The Chairperson also went on to say that a united approach by all stakeholders such as police prosecutors, Judiciary, medical expert, NGOs, civil society and other Government departments and agencies working in this field have to work in a coordinated manner to combat human trafficking.
Subhadra Rai, Chairperson, Sikkim Women Commission in her address stated that trafficking of women and children is a matter of great concern as they are exposed to unprecedented crime. It is for the first time that such activity is organised in the State by involving NGOs and all stakeholders in a common goal to combat human trafficking, she mentioned.
She observed that Sikkim has almost nil crime compared to other States and informed that Anti Human Trafficking Unit has been set up in all transit points in the State and stressed that emphasis should be given to sensitise and aware the people in order to prevent this crime.
