GUWAHATI, April 6 – The National Taekwondo Poomsae Championship for Juniors and Seniors got off to a colourful start here today at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium.
On the opening day, till filing of this report, competitions were held in three categories where Goa, TFI and Delhi won one gold medal each. Tanvi S Nadkarni of Goa struck the first gold medal of the championship in women’s senior individual U29 code category. T Thangneihkimi of Mizoram won silver in that event while P Soniya Devi of Manipur and Jancy K of Tamil Nadu bagged bronze medals.In the women’s U39 code, Jyoti Nagpal of TFI clinched the gold medal while Goa’s Elizabeth Flora Luis took the silver. Shivani Agarwal of Delhi and Sabitri Pradhan of Sikkim were the bronze medal winners in that group. Lalit Tirkey of Delhi and Himan Lahkar of Assam won gold and silver medals respectively in the men’s U59 code individual event.
The championship, organised by All Assam Taekwondo Association, was formally inaugurated by State Sports Minister Ajit Singh. Organising general secretary Debajit Hazarika welcomed the participants and guests. Harish Kumar, president, Taekwondo Federation of India, GP Singh IGP, Gaurav Bothra, Director of Sports, Dhruba Hazarika, former president of State taekwondo body were also present on the occasion. Altogether 240 players from 24 States are taking part in the meet.
