Siliguri, April 8.TT: The Trinamul Chhatra Parishad has won all 18 seats of the student union at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, so long an SFI bastion which had controlled it since its inception 23 years ago.
The SFI had filed a writ petition in Calcutta High Court alleging irregularities in the election process.
“We have bagged all 18 seats of the student union. This is a great achievement for us. We have broken a tradition as the SFI was holding the union for the past 23 years,” said NBMCH unit president of the TMCP Soutrik Roy, this afternoon, a day after the polls.
The SFI had alleged that the college authorities had gone against the college constitution that says a union should be allowed to function for a full term of one year and polls to the body should be held between July 1 and September 31.
The previous SFI-led union was dissolved last month after the college authorities found that it “was not functioning properly”.
The student body’s tenure was supposed to end on July 18.
“An early poll can be held only in emergency situations. There is no emergency at the NBMCH now still the authorities called for an early election. On Tuesday we had demanded that they reissue fresh dates for the elections between July 1 and September 30 but the officials did not respond. We have filed a writ petition on Wednesday challenging the irregularities in the election process. The authorities have flouted the rules and held the polls under pressure from the TMCP,” said Anurup Saha, a Darjeeling district secretariat member of the SFI.
“The hearing will be held this week,” he added. NBMCH authorities have, however, denied the allegations.
“The college council has the prerogative to decide if there is an emergency situation. We decided to conduct the election now because six posts of office-bearers were vacant and the union was not functioning properly.
Students’ affairs pertaining to hostel and library were being neglected. The new union members will take oath in a day or two,” said an official.
