Siliguri, May 4 : Cyclonic storm caused derailment of an inter-city passenger train near Alipurduar and flattened scores of houses injuring nearly 100 people elsewhere in the Dooars and Terai, official sources said today.
The storm disrupted power, communication and water supplies in the districts of Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and neighbouring areas.
Northeast Frontier Railway spokesman Situ Hazong told UNI the Alipurduar bound inter-city passenger train from Siliguri jumped the rails at a place between Mujnai and Madarihat stations in the Dooars around 2230 hrs last night.
The engine and four bogies in front got derailed, injuring five people. While three of them were discharged after being administered first-aid, two were admitted to the railway hospital in Alipurduar.
The accident occurred after a huge tree, uprooted by the storm, fell on the tracks damaging the iron rails at several places. The driver could not detect the damage in the darkness. The intercity trains run through deep forests and tea gardens.
Train services on the section had been suspended after the mishap.
Another report said about 60 houses were flattened near Phoolbari, about 20 km south of here, wounding the residents, after high velocity wind of over 100 kmph swept the area last night.
Officials sources said there had been no report of any death in the storm and thunder that raged for more than 20 minutes.
Reports of injury and damage to houses also poured in from several places of the Terai and the officials said they were yet to assess the damage.
Residents were reminded of the fierce storm of May 15 last year when more than 450 houses were damaged in Alipurduar subdivision. (UNI)
