Former AIGL leader wants to join TMC

KURSEONG, 25 MAY: Now it is the All India Gorkha League (AIGL) youth wing central committee president Chewang Bhutia who is interested in joining the Trinamul Congress.
Former Panighatta GNLF leader Rajen Mukhia, former Salbari, Siliguri GJMM leader Bishal Chettri, and Kalimpong UGRF leaders Ajay Dahal and Santosh Subba have already been in the news because they are planning to join the Trinamul Congress.
Addressing a press conference in Kalimpong, Mr Bhutia announced his resignation from the AIGL. In addition to Mr Bhutia, AIGL youth wing sub-divisional committee vice president Chattra Gurung also announced his resignation from the party at the Press conference.
"There is no democracy in the Hills, instead there is injustice, brutality and corruption as the leaders are busy making money and enjoying public funds," Mr Bhutia said.
"In these circumstances, our associates and supporters are not in a position to join any regional party freely. That’s the reason, keeping in mind these problems, I am forced to resign from the AIGL party," he said.
He also added that slain AIGL leader Madan Tamang always used to believe in collective leadership. "Accordingly, I also followed and repeated his slogans, but unfortunately, no one in the regional parties understood the slogans of collective leadership due to their egos and desires for personal benefit," he said.
Mr Bhutia, who was in the AIGL for the past 12 years, said that he will not quit politics and is planning to join the TMC. He said he is in contact with the TMC leadership, but it is not a done deal yet.
"I have never forgotten nor have betrayed Gorkhaland since it is my mother," he said, adding that "95 per cent of the people in the Hills wanted to stay under the administration of Bengal, hence what will we do with the remaining 5 per cent? That’s why we support and want to join the TMC."
In contrast, Mr Chattra Gurung said he was retiring from politics due to family problems, and wanted a normal family life. Mr Gurung was in the AIGL for the last three years, before which he was in the GNLF.
AIGL Kalimpong sub-divisional committee president Trivuwan Rai and vice-president Kamal Katuwal have already resigned from the AIGL.
