KOLKATA, 11 MAY: Recruitment of teachers for Darjeeling schools is expected to begin in June.
The state government has decided to set up a regional School Service Commission (SSC) for Darjeeling within a week. The commission will conduct an examination to recruit teachers for about 770 Darjeeling schools, along the lines of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission's exam.
Again, 269 teachers who were appointed by the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) on a contractual basis will be given preference during the recruitment procedure.
The decision was taken at a meeting of officials of the school education department and Darjeeling MLAs at Writers’ Buildings today.
Recruitment in the schools of the region has been stalled for the past two decades. There are nearly 671 vacancies. Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri said teachers have left posts to retire, which have not been filled. The DGHC-appointed teachers have long demanded the regularisation of their jobs.
"It has been decided that the teachers will have to appear at the examination along with the fresh candidates, but will be awarded additional marks depending on their teaching experience," Mr Chettri said.
There is likely to be no age limit for these teachers to appear at the examination, he said, adding that most of these teachers were appointed almost 15 years ago.
The chairman of the seven-member commission will be appointed very soon, Mr Chettri said.
