DARJEELING, 5 AUG: A day after the GTA oath-taking ceremony, the West
Bengal government has sanctioned two new toy trains for the Hills.
Railway minister Mukul Roy inaugurated the two trains today in the
presence of the newly appointed GTA Sabha chief executive Bimal Gurung
and the North Frontier general manager R S Virdi and North Bengal
development minister Gautam Deb.
While one train will ply from
Darjeeling to Ghoom, the other will run from Kurseong to Darjeeling. Mr
Roy also assured the people of the Hills a reconstructed Highway (NH55)
within 2013 to link the Hills and the plains and a readjournment of the
Toy train that plies from Darjeeling to NJP.
“The non-functioning
of NH-55 had obstructed the plying of joy rides and other major
transportation. The road and transport minister had already sanctioned
Rs 50 crore for reconstructing Highway and I assure the work will soon
start and end within 2013,” he said. A major portion of NH-55 at the
Tindharia zone on the outskirts of Kurseong has been devamped in the
landslides of last year, endangering the Tindharia railway workshop.
“For
the development of the workshop the state government will sanction Rs
10 crore,” said Mr Roy. The minister was presented a memorandum by
Kurseong MLA Rohit Sharma in favour of Kurseong railway workers.“The
grievances of the DHR workers to further develop joy rides will be taken
into an account,” the minister said. Mr Roy said that soon train lines
will run from Sevoke to Mirik and from Mirik to Gangtok.
